1. Can you tell me more about Summative -v- Formative Audit?

A summative audit is, essentially, a Pass-or-Fail test. During the hiring process and when promoting people, you may need to test the communication skills of candidates so you can decide whether to proceed or not. Sometimes, this simply means whether the applicant’s/employee’s English level meets a certain standard. Quite often, however, employers need to know a candidate’s ability and aptitude for carrying out specific job-related functions. At SkillsBar, we can carry out a series of written and spoken tests in order to assess candidates, using a set of criteria that we develop in accordance with the client’s exact requirements.

In many cases, however, a more detailed evaluation is needed for identifying precise strengths and weaknesses in language and communicative ability. This formative audit is normally used where organizations wish to determine the training and mentoring needs of their employees, who perhaps are being considered for promotion or are successful new hires who need help in developing their skills and abilities.

  • A range of methods are used, depending on the situation, on the client’s precise needs, and on whether a summative or formative audit is required:
