Our Story

Back in 2011, Mike Waters, a seasoned Business English and communication trainer from Ireland, made Bucharest his home alongside his wife, Yolanda, who grew up in the city. Mike’s work had taken him to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and several countries across Africa and Europe.
When he arrived in Romania, he noticed something missing: while English schools were plentiful in Bucharest, they mostly taught general English through slow, academic courses. What working professionals actually needed was something different—quick, practical skills to help them handle real business situations with confidence.

This realisation inspired Mike to launch KeyEnglish, a training centre focused on business communication, workplace English, and essential soft skills. The aim was straightforward: provide English teaching that also covers practical workplace essentials—such as presentations, business writing, negotiations, and effective communication at work. KeyEnglish served everyone from corporate teams to individuals and exam candidates, always with a clear purpose.

By 2015, with Bucharest’s traffic getting worse and people’s schedules getting busier, flexible learning became increasingly important. Anticipating this shift, Mike and Yolanda started developing online training options long before they became mainstream.
By 2018, KeyEnglish had built a solid reputation for energetic virtual classes, paving the way for future growth.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 and changed how people work and learn, the company was ready for the transition. KeyEnglish moved all its courses online and rebranded as SkillsBar, focusing entirely on practical training via the virtual classroom that puts learners first and delivers clear results.

Today, SkillsBar is recognised for its online training, offering focused courses that help people improve their English and succeed in workplaces around the world.
